ALIGNS WITH FAR-RIGHT EXTREMISTS
Closely tied to accused Domestic Terrorist Matt Shea.
Speaks at rallies for Militia Groups like the 3%ers.
Shows up with heavily armed men to intimidate local youths at a peaceful vigil.

He votes in the fringe minority – he was one of a small handful of extremists voting against popular bipartisan bills over 250 times; 10 times he was the ONLY one to vote against every single Representative, including his own party.

The 26th Legislative District is the most purple district in Washington. We are evenly divided between parties, resulting in very close elections. Our district is very poorly served by this angry buffoon, who represents only the farthest right margins of his party.

Only Liars Tell Lies – JESSE YOUNG IS A LIAR

Last Thursday at the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce Candidate Forum, Representative Jesse Young was asked why his social media is dominated by posts about antifa and none about white supremacy organizations. He then launched into a ridiculous and wholly dishonest story.

FACT: Last June there was a vigil for George Floyd and Breanna Taylor that was held in Gig Harbor. The vigil was attended by a couple hundred mostly young locals.

FICTION: Jesse falsely claimed that he confirmed with Chief Busey and Mayor Kuhn, in advance of the vigil, that antifa was expected at the vigil. 

FACT: Both Mayor Kuhn and Police Chief Busey have emphatically denied there was any such threat and have called out Young on his lies. Mayor Kuhn stated on his FB Live that these lies undermines trust the public have in government officials by implying that they somehow failed to protect us from a non-existent threat.

FICTION: Jesse falsely claimed that Gasoline cannisters were found hidden in bushes.

FACT: During the vigil an empty gasoline cannister fell off of a landscape truck.

Chief Busey, who was at the vigil, passing out water to the kids, saw the cannister, and removed it. Chief Busey has said he would have turned the canister over to the FBI if it was connected to a threat.

FICTION: Jesse falsely claimed that this “threat” is why he showed up at the vigil with heavily armed men.

FACT: Jesse has been widley lambasted for his intimidating behavior at the vigil last June, and now, four months later, he has finally come up with a dangerous lie to justify his bullying of idealistic teens.

FACT: Jesse has jumped on the Trump ploy of using sensationalist scare tactics and hopes people will somehow believe that antifa will soon burn down Gig Harbor.  

The 26th LD should reject a Representative who is a lying, hot headed, armed bully deceptively stirring up fear. This is far more dangerous than an imaginary antifa.

JESSE YOUNG FINDS WORKING ON TAX REFORM TAXING

Jesse Young will tell anyone who will listens how he is opposed to any new taxes. Jesse uses “the elderly widow living on a fixed income” strawman to somehow justify that billionaires pay a smaller percentage than anyone else. He has long and loudly proclaimed “No New Taxes” and that property and B&O taxes were unfair.

We can all agree our Washington tax system has become overly complicated and unfairly burdens many residents — we have the most regressive in the country. This is why last year ESHB 1109 provided almost $2 million dollars for a Tax Structure Work Group to analyze various tax alternatives to our current tax structure and the impacts on various taxpayer groups. They could literally recommend wiping every tax off the books and starting over with a tax structure that is fair to all Washingtonians.

Despite his seniority in the Legislature, Jesse has never been entrusted with leadership positions. Finally, Jesse was appointed to this Work Group by the GOP – the opportunity of his legislative career.

Let’s examine his contribution to this work group thus far.

The group has met four times, yet he has provided no input or made any valuable suggestions to fix our flawed tax code. Young’s only comment to this committee came in the Oct 9. 2020 meeting during a discussion of Intangible Property Tax. He said he “was curious about Social Media”, wanting to know if they could put a tax on social media.

Rather than finding changes to our regressive tax code, his sole contribution to this serious study group was to suggest a Social Media Tax.

True leaders offer ideas, ask questions, and become part of the solution. After years of complaining, Jesse has failed in his first opportunity at leadership. It’s time for Jesse to take a seat with Tim Eyman on the sidelines and let others fix the problems.

We need new leadership in the 26th LD in Olympia.

JESSE YOUNG – HARD FAIL ON ENVIRONMENT

If you listen to Jesse discuss his record on the environment, you would get the impression that he is Governor Jay Inslee’s inspirational muse on climate policy. But here in the real world, Jesse has an 18% rating from the Washington Conservation Voters – that’s a hard FAIL.

Is his voting record is a stunning denial of the impacts of climate change, or a peculiar loyalty to Big Polluters?

He has voted over 50 times against environmental protections!

This includes multiple votes against protections for our Orcas, against reduction in toxic pollutants, and, notably against measures to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

For Jesse Young – Some Constituents Are More Equal Than Others

Jesse Young claims that he wants to protect all his constituents, but he has no interest in standing up for his LGBTQI community. He has habitually voted against even the most basic protections, perhaps most egregiously in his vote against banning Conversion Therapy for minors.

At a time when Donald Trump and the Conservatives on the US Supreme Court are putting Marriage Equality and other hard-won civil rights in their crosshairs, we should be deeply alarmed at any attempts to weaken Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender, and Queer rights and protections.

AGAINST forming a commission to focus on LGBTQ issues. (SB5356-2019)

AGAINST forming a Hate Crime Advisory Group to raise awareness and strategies to reduce hate crimes, including gender-based hate motives. (SB1732-2019)

AGAINST a Hate Crime Bill that concerns defenses and liabilities with regard to assault and other crimes based on gender, gender identity, gender expression, or sexual identity. (HB1687)

AGAINST creating the position of a LGBTQ within the Washington Department of Veteran’s Affairs. (HB 5900-2020)

 As Donald Trump has sought to undermine the service and benefits of our brave LGBTQ military members, veterans, and their families, Jesse has echoed Trump’s worst instincts on this issue.

WA26 Reps Jesse Young and Michelle Caldier – Unmasked


Rep. Jesse Young and Rep. Michell Caldier have been vocal supporters of the President’s Covid19 misinformation policy.

We can only hope the events of this week can become a teachable moment for Rep. Jesse Young and Rep. Michelle Caldier, who have openly defied Washington State Public CoVid-19 Guidelines from the very beginning. They both have been seen not wearing masks in public.  Both Caldier and Young have been at odds with Gov Inslee about the CoVid-19 shutdown and reopening plan from the beginning. Is their non-masking wearing a symbol of their political arguments against the Governor or do they simply not believe in Public Health science?

Caldier and Young have expressed their disapprovals in different manners consistent with their own personalities.  Young has been both loud and “in your face”, demonstrating at many public rallies while Caldier has taken several different passive-aggressive tactics to defying Public Health Guidelines. Both severely undermining the health and safety of all Washingtonians

In January 2019 Jesse Young, standing with his accused domestic terrorist “ride or die” buddy Matt Shea, said “Representative Shea or I would take a bullet for the Lt Governor; we would take a bullet for any one of our constituents. We are here to defend you as well as our service for you”. Constituents are not so demanding as that -- we only ask that he simply wear a mask and encourage others to do the same.

Michelle Caldier at Gig Harbor Chamber Public Affairs Forum - July 2 2020 District 26, was asked “With the spread of CoVid-19 spiking, do you agree that masks should be required in public?” Her short answer was “I do not support a mandate”. The balance of her answer was trying to explain how “Mask Wearing” was not enforceable and just human nature to resist. Many laws have been passed changing our behaviors to improve on public health and safety such as seat belts, motorcycle helmets, drunk driving, and smoking in public. These behavioral changes have become social norms with expectations of cooperation, and that people tend to obey the law if they expect many others to do so.

Caldier claims to be a leader but refuses to lead. Mask wearing during this CoVid-19 pandemic certainly will save many lives and should also become a social norm. Claiming something is a personal right regardless of the situation is not what living in a free society means. In a free society we do have an obligation to our fellow citizens. Exposing ourselves or others to undue danger would seem to be something that can and should be regulated. Hence, seatbelts requirements, laws against driving under the influence, smoking bans, and wearing masks to avoid getting or giving a deadly disease all make sense. We wear pants in public. We wear shoes and shirts in restaurants.

During the pandemic Caldier has been visiting businesses bringing care packages to front line essential workers, a noble gesture if done safely. As a former Doctor of Dentistry, she should understand the risk of posing for publicity photos un-masked with little physical distancing. The employee in this photo (June2) stated he removed his mask for the photo. Was this an altruistic gesture or a cheap political stunt?

In June Caldier had her team of young volunteer pose UNMASKED & NOT SOCIAL DISTANCED for a FB post recruiting more volunteers to do doorbelling. No responsible politician should be going door to door during a plague. This activity expose both the constituents and volunteers to this virus.  Just posing for the photo endangered her team.

On May 9th in Olympia Jesse Young spoke to 1500 people who attended an unpermitted rally (Hazardous Liberty) rally against Governor Inslee’s shutdown to stop the CoVid-19 spread. Jesse did not wear a mask and rambled for seven minutes about religious freedoms, first amendment violations, and not needing a law degree to read the Constitution.

Democracy-hating Gubernatorial candidate Loren Culp held protest rallies in Gig Harbor on Sept 27 and in Port Orchard on Sep 30, drawing large crowds of non-mask wearing supporters. Young was a speaker at the former and Caldier at the latter. They both have made masks a major theme of their campaigns. Claims of mask wearing infringing on personal freedoms during a global pandemic are absurd. A true leader armed with the best current public health information should be trying to help convince the public to wear mask. To fix the economy we must take control over the virus. It is not a choice between the economy and public health, there is a mutual interdependence.

Clearly Jesse Young and Michelle Caldier do not understand the situation. It is overdue, we MUST make a change in our leadership in Olympia

Rep. Jesse Young – The Unhealthy Choice

With COVID 19 raging without an end in sight, and the Supreme Court poised to overturn the ACA, citizens are rightfully alarmed about the future of healthcare.

Our current representative, Jesse Young has voted repeatedly against guarding our health. From his perilous attacks on wearing masks, to his vote against Paid Family Leave, he literally puts our families in danger.

He has posted specific instructions on his FB page on how to skirt rules regarding wearing masks in stores and businesses. He advises his constituents on their rights NOT to wear masks. Here is a small sampling of his other strikes against healthcare:

He voted against Paid Family Leave, a critical support for thousands of families, particularly during a Global Pandemic. Workers deserve to have time off to care for loved ones without the added burden and stress of financial insecurity. This type of stress can lead to its own set of healthcare consequences. HB2614

Against limiting out-of-pocket costs for insulin. This bill would limit out of pocket expenses to $100/month. A life-saving bill that will prevent countless unnecessary deaths from patients forced to ration their insulin due to financial hardship. SB6087

Against Telemedicine Payment Parity. In our current crisis, Telemedicine has become an indispensable piece of our healthcare structure and will only become more so. Making it more difficult for providers to participate in telemedicine makes no sense, which explains why only 2 others voted against this bill. HB5385

Against forming an Opioid advisory Council that would supervise funding and distribution of services helping to curb this tragic epidemic. HB 2786

Against updating of HIV testing. SB6580

Against reforms to student health plans and other bills regarding easing access to reproductive healthcare. Another strike against women’s health issues. HB2522 and SB5602

Against Health System and Drug transparency reforms. HB2710 HB2036

Against Ambulance transport quality assurance. HB6534

Rep. Jesse Young – Women and Children Last

Jesse Young has a grim track record when it comes to protecting women and children’s health. He is intractably against women’s reproductive rights but doesn’t seem to worry much about children beyond that. He self-righteously opposes abortion (including in cases of rape and incest), yet he votes against reducing prenatal exposure to pesticides.

Here are just a few examples of his hypocrisy:

He has voted to prevent health plans from covering not only abortion, but from covering all contraceptive devices.

Last year he supported legislation to ban all abortion, regardless of circumstances. If he is so concerned with the unborn, then why vote against protections from pre-natal exposure to pesticides? (SB6518 – he was one of only 9 votes against this bill.)

Or against schools carrying antidotes for Opioid overdoses? (HB1039)

Or against funding for children’s mental health services and Tele-med solutions? (SB5903, HB2439)

Or against early intervention services for infants and toddlers with disabilities? (SB5879 – one of 5 against)

 Or against revised oversight of Foster Care? (HB2008, SB6222)

Or against stopping classroom discrimination on the basis of immigration status or religion? (HB2816 – one of 2 against.)

Why skip a vote enhancing protections for victims of child trafficking? (SB5885)

Lastly – Jesse has been loudly and proudly against the Sex Education Bill, disingenuously mis-characterizing the bill with incendiary language. This seems to be his prime issue. (SB5395)

Rep. Jesse Young – Ties to Fringe Militia Group 3%ers


Jesse Young supports the 3 Percenters*, an extreme right-wing organization, designated an “anti-government group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

They are closely aligned with the “Oathkeepers”, and have been called one of the most dangerous extremist groups in Canada.

Formed in reaction to the election of Barack Obama, they use intimidation and bullying tactics to stoke fear and pit citizens against one another in order to thwart sensible gun legislation.

This heavily armed group provided security for the Charlottesville “Unite the Right” march.

Jesse Young is not the right fit for the 26th LD. Our community deserves a representative who will not be conjuring fear and violence.

Rep. Jesse Young – A Loose Cannon

Jesse Young has a troubling past with anger management issues.
Allegations that Jesse Young is consistently verbally abusive to his staff are “credible and serious” according to a State House investigation into complaints about him. The House Administration concluded that he has a “pattern of hostile and intimidating behavior” that resulted in him being barred from having a legislative assistant, and was also restricted from having a sponsored legislative office for one year.

Here's how multiple former staffers characterized our State Representative: “unglued” “outright mean” “screaming fits” “meltdowns” “we called them weekly staff ‘beatings’” Young could have resolved these restrictions by undergoing anger management training, but there is no evidence that he has done this. In fact, he has denied having anger issues.
If Jesse Young doesn’t have respect and compassion for his own staff – many of them volunteers – how does he feel about his constituents?
An effective leader needs to exude confidence and strength. Of course, they should expect the staff to be competent and enthusiastic. Meltdowns and screaming fits are not signs of strength or strong leadership. They are, in fact, the polar opposite. The 26th LD Democrats believe leaders should generate inspiration, not degradation.

Jesse Young – Questionable Work Ethic

Work ethic. Jesse Young doesn’t seem to understand the definition of either of those words. Let’s look at the work: In 2019 he missed 67 votes. A majority of the votes he missed concerned matters of public safety.  Would your boss let you ignore 67 assignments? 
He skipped out on votes concerning: 
  • Prevention of Child Sex Trafficking 
  • Pesticide Safety 
  • Wildfire Prevention 
  • Water Quality Protections
  • Plus over 60 other pieces of important legislation 
Reminder - WE are Jesse’s boss. Jesse Young's "Pet Bills" His work product looks even thinner when we shine a light on the pet bills he introduced. In four years, he has introduced 100 bills, but only three have been signed into law.
He consistently “recycles” his own previously rejected bills. Many have been submitted three times!
These re-run proposals include abolishing the estate tax (only affects multi-multi-millionaires), banning UN recommendations regarding sustainability, and his cherished “zipper-merge” bill.  Jesse Young's "Hero Bills" He also habitually introduces “Hero Bills” -- bills designed only to cater to donors or special interest groups, with no chance of passing, often due to missed deadlines, or other rule infractions.  What is the 26th LD paying him for? Arguably his absence and failure rate is for the greater good – Jesse’s votes are extreme and often truly fringe. We are certainly safer and better off without his repeat loser bills and his extreme votes.  However, it does beg the question -- what is the 26th LD paying him for? Our community needs a Representative who will show up, work hard, and keep us safe!

Rep. Jesse Young, Armed Men, Show Up at Peaceful BLM Protest.

On June 3rd, a peaceful vigil of 300-400 predominantly young people was held in solidarity with Black Lives Matter.

Our State Representative Jesse Young intruded on the peaceful vigil with heavily armed men, Trump signs, and flags. (None of the other attendees carried political signs.) Jesse brandished a large poster warning that any property damage “would not be tolerated”. 

What “should not be tolerated” – is another term for Jesse Young. Jesse has a habit of clamoring for attention, but menacingly trying to make a Black Lives Matter vigil about himself is a new low.

Intimidation, Disrespect and Implied Accusations

The intimidation, disrespect, and implied accusations aimed at the gathering of local high school and college students were intensely disturbing, which was obviously the purpose. What these armed men intended to do if there actually had been any mischief is a deeply ominous question.

“There were a lot of guns. There was one guy with a shotgun and a bandolier full of rounds across his chest,” reported one of the young protesters standing near Jesse.

Jesse claims the vigilantes weren’t with him, yet he stood with them the entire time he was at the rally – all night long. Let’s just say, for the sake of argument, that they were not with him (they were – see photos).

Why would a State Representative condone heavily armed men threatening an earnest group of young people expressing their constitutional right to protest?! 

Is this truly “representative” of Gig Harbor and our community and district?

One freshly minted young voter later remarked:

“A lot of kids don’t know who their State Rep is or why they would even vote for State Rep. Well I know who my Rep is now, and I know I won’t be voting for Jesse Young!”

Rep. Jesse Young – Supports Domestic Terrorist Matt Shea

Jesse Young has found himself alone in the House in his support of accused Domestic Terrorist, Matt Shea..

In January, 2020, Jesse Young called for a “Unity Rally” held on the Capitol Steps in Olympia to gather support for his buddy Matt Shea. Bucking his Republican colleagues, he urged them to reject any formal legislation against Shea in the wake of accusations of domestic terrorism against Shea.

“A few dozen protesters gathered outside the Capitol Monday calling on lawmakers to pass legislation to uphold the ballot measure.” Jesse’s ill-fated attempt to build a movement against House Minority Leader J.T. Wilcox and Republican leadership fizzled. Tacoma News Tribune January 17, 2020 article.

It appears not a single representative of the House stood tall with Jesse Young on the Capitol Steps.

“After JT Wilcox called for Shea’s resignation, Shea refused to resign, even as House Republicans moved quickly to suspend him from the state House Republican Caucus. He has been removed from his House committee assignments, his seat on the House floor was moved to the back of the chamber and he can’t use House Republican staff.”

Jesse Young’s past extreme views have kept him from achieving favored status by Republican House leadership. Despite Young’s seniority among the 40 Republicans in the House, he has never been assigned as Minority Ranking Member to any of the 20 house committees, nor has he held any role in Republican House Leadership. Appointing himself as a de-facto Field Marshal of this Unity Rally may have rankled the party leadership even more.

Jesse's Playing Extreme Power Games 

What does this mean for the constituents of 26LD? Jesse Young will receive less and less support on any issues he brings to the legislature. We need a Representative who will work the system to the benefit of the 26LD and not one who plays extreme power games to support accused domestic terrorists.

Jesse Young Sides with Matt Shea Against GOP Leadership

Why would he stand against the GOP House leadership and support Shea, who is a leader of the Patriot Movement, and "planned, engaged in, and promoted a total of three armed conflicts of political violence against the United States government" between 2014 and 2016.

These are certainly not the values we hold in the 26th LD, and we think both parties would agree!

Rep. Jesse Young – Extreme Minority

Jesse Young is an extremist. He is cheating us out of representation in Olympia, siding with a tiny handful of “you’re on your own” outliers who vote in opposition to even their own Republican party colleagues. In some cases, he was the sole dissenting vote!

He just does not seem to be able to work well with others and shows loyalty to no one, except perhaps accused domestic terrorist, Matt Shea.

This has consequences. Even though he has seniority in the legislature, he HAS NOT been selected for any position of leadership, leaving the 26th LD without a strong voice in the House Legislature. Jesse’s fringe views are not helping us build a stronger community, one that works for us all. Democrats are willing to work together with Republicans in a spirit of patriotism and genuine love for the community.

We don’t need a divisive legislator who cannot even agree with his own party.

  • Ballot security measure? Nope! (94-2) HB2008
  • Voted against reducing classroom sizes. (91-7) HB2108
  • Eyeball tattoos? – Fine with Jesse! (94-4) HB1856
